It was sad to hear yesterday that James Ferguson-Lees passed away in the early hours of 11th January 2017, three days after his 88th birthday. He was executive editor of BB for 19 years from 1954 and oversaw a number of major innovations during that time; he was instrumental in the establishment of both the British Birds Rarities Committee and the Rare Breeding Birds Panel.
