The white face, generally grey-and-white appearance and long neck are all noticeable features, but perhaps the most striking characteristic of the elegant wader in plate 79 (shown reduced here) is its long, very thin and delicate, straight bill. Taking this together with its whitish underparts and relatively unmarked mantle, one may be forgiven for thoughts of Wilson's Phalarope
