As 2005 drew to a close, the virulent H5N1 strain of avian influenza was reported in poultry in the Crimea peninsula of Ukraine. This was the fourth country in Europe to report bird flu, following outbreaks in October in Romania (dead Mute Swans Cygnus olor found in the Danube delta), Russia (an outbreak at a poultry farm 200 km south of Moscow) and Croatia (Mute Swans killed by H5N1 on fish ponds
