Abstract Britain’s first giant petrel, either a Southern Giant Petrel Macronectes giganteus or a Northern Giant Petrel M. halli, was watched flying north past Whitburn Coastal Park, Co. Durham, on 2nd July 2019, and was seen later the same day at Cullernose Point, Northumberland. An account of its discovery, associated weather conditions and previous European records is presented.
