The Carl Zeiss Award is awarded for the best rarity submission of the year.
This year’s winner, a submission of a Brown Shrike on Out Skerries from Michael McKee, was ‘a veritable masterclass of the photographic submission genre’. While many ‘traditional’ birders bemoan the death of the field notebook, there is no denying that most keen birders now carry a camera and know how to use it, and that this has replaced the notebook in many cases. Michael is far more than just a ‘record-shot photographer’ and his use of a camera and presentation of the images as a recording tool is second to none.
