Abstract This short paper summarises the taxonomic history, distribution and status of the ‘Purple Swamphen’ complex. It documents all the British records of swamphens assessed by the British Birds Rarities Committee (BBRC) and the British Ornithologists’ Union Records Committee (BOURC).
