Alan was born on 5th February 1933 and lived in the Coundon area of Coventry. As a young boy, his interest in wild birds drew him into the countryside around his home, but when, aged 12, he and a friend came upon a splendid Eurasian Jay Garrulus glandarius, he became truly hooked.
