The trade in wild birds is to be banned permanently throughout the EU because of fears for human and animal health. The ban, agreed in Brussels by member states' chief vets on 11th January, will be effective from 1st July. It means that up to two million wild birds will be saved from the pet trade, which has been blamed for significant declines in at least 55 threatened species, most notably parrot
