Black-throated Diver attacking Great Crested Grebe. O n 29th December 1984, on the Egleton reserve at Rutland Water, Leicestershire, we watched a Black-throated Diver Gavia arctica dive close to a Great Crested Grebe Podiceps cristatus which was swimming past, and apparently attack the grebe below the water. Once the diver surfaced, it lifted its breast out of the water, with wings outstretch
