This section contains various items that we hope will be a useful reference source.

The British Birds List is a list of the birds recorded in the Western Palearctic. The taxonomic decisions follow those of the British Ornithologist’s Union (or the European Taxonomic Advisory Committee for those outside the remit of the BOU), but the common names are those used by BB in the journal. We feel that they are a good compromise between the names commonly used by birders in spoken English, and the fuller common names that give no margin for confusion (but can seem unnecessarily long-winded).

The list of County Recorders provides a current point of contact for each Recording Area in Britain; these areas are defined (with the help of a map) in the Recording Areas section.

Finally, to encourage all birders to behave responsibly when they’re out and about, the Birdwatchers’ Code and the Bird Photographers’ Code completes this section
