Response to ‘Bird flu strikes a seabird city’

While we share the deep concern about the impact of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) expressed by the author of May’s BB eye, ‘Bird flu strikes a seabird city – a personal view from Bempton’ (Brit. Birds 116: 242–245), the article presented several factual errors that we feel are important to correct. Given the importance and sensitivity of the issues around HPAI, it is disappointing that the matter was not discussed with the RSPB beforehand. Our dedicated staff and volunteers work extremely hard to protect Britain’s seabird colonies, and to monitor and understand the scale of the spread of HPAI. Consequently, we feel that the BB eye by Alan Bayes does not provide a fair, informed or accurate view of this important work.
