How do I order digital?
You may order online. You can renew for digital only, combined print and digital or take out a new subscription. You can even add digital to the remainder of your current subscription term and enjoy both the paper and print versions. We can currently only process digital subscription orders via the British Birds website (i.e. there is no telephone ordering facility at present).
I want to upgrade to receive both print and digital version of British Birds?
Existing subscribers may upgrade their subscription to print and digital for only £10. The digital access will automatically be added to your existing subscription entitlement through till the end of your subscription. Click here to order.
I want to migrate to British Birds Digital only.
No problem, email us and we’ll cancel your paper subscription and set-up a digital subscription for you starting with the next issue through till the end of your current subscription period.
I’m late renewing, can you backdate my digital subscription?
No, sorry we are unable to do that. A digital subscription runs from the date you order for twelve issues. If you require access to back issues, they are available to purchase through the British Birds app or the Pocket Mags store. All issues from the beginning of Volume 108 (January 2015) are available to purchase.
Why isn’t digital significantly cheaper than print?
Because of the way digital is fulfilled there are costs associated with using a third party application to display the issues. Also if a digital issue is sold on other platforms, then a sales royalty must be paid. There are also additional production costs associated with preparing the digital issue for publication. The published information is the same as the print journal – it’s just the method delivery of that information is different. Order via the BB website and you’ll ensure that BB receives the most revenue and maximizes its support for worthwhile conservation and development projects.
What are the benefits of a digital subscription?
The digital edition looks the same as the print edition and is still the same great read, but with some enhanced features. You can download your library of issues to your device and access them all, anytime anywhere. If you change device, you can download them again to the new one using your Pocketmags account and the BB app. Our digital archive is fully searchable from the library page within the app. All links in articles and sponsor adverts are fully live allowing you to quickly view related information. The digital edition will allow us to develop further enhancements in future editions including use of larger image galleries, sound and video.
Do I need to be online to read my digital issue?
No. Once you have downloaded an issue to your mobile device you can read it anywhere, no internet connection is required. On PC, if you have Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 you can download the Pocketmags app which includes offline reading. There is currently no Mac offline reading solution.
Do I get a pdf copy of the magazine?
No, the digital edition is not a soft copy of the printed magazine, but is supplied through an app. The app offers a range of benefits over a pdf copy, such as content search and supporting web links within content, and allows us to develop the digital issue in the future by adding new benefits such as the inclusion of further sound, video and image files.
What happens if I cancel my subscription?
The issues that you have paid for are yours to keep. You can always access them via the Pocketmags website or by downloading them to your device.
What happens if I change my device?
If you get a new tablet or smartphone and want to access your digital issues from that, you simply need to install the BB app on the new device, log in as usual and you will be able to download all your past issues.
Is there a charge to switch between paper and digital, or to upgrade to a combined subscription part way through my current subscription?
An upgrade from a print only to a combined print and digital subscription costs just £10. Switching from paper only to digital only, or vice versa, is free of charge in the first instance; thereafter there will be a £10 administration charge for subsequent switches. There is no additional charge to change the type of subscription at your annual renewal point.
