How to apply
Grants are awarded to a wide range of projects, up to a maximum of £3,000.
Each application will be evaluated on the basis of how the project meets the Charitable Trust’s charitable objectives – promoting the study and conservation of birds and their habitats. We focus on the birds of the Western Palearctic and UK Overseas Territories.
Successful applicants are expected to provide a written report on their project for publication in British Birds, which can be by way of a brief informal report.
The deadline for grant applications is 30th September in each year, with successful applicants usually receiving funding by 31st December.
Projects can be funded for more than one year, at the discretion of the Trustees.

Young birder grants
Thanks to individual donors, the Charitable Trust is also able to award grants to young birders to encourage them in their birding. Successful projects have included research, habitat conservation, ringing, and visiting an observatory or bird camp.
Young Birder Grant applicants need to be aged between 16 and 21 on the date of their application. Grants for Young Birders' projects are up to a maximum of £500.
Successful applicants also receive a year’s free access to British Birds online.
Successful applicants are expected to provide a brief written report on their project for possible publication in British Birds.
The deadline for grant applications is 31st May, with successful applicants usually receiving funding by 31st August.
