Stephen Menzie (Brit. Birds 117: 2–3) said that, in relation to the American Ornithological Society’s (AOS) planned abolition of all English language bird names featuring people, he had ‘a lot of sympathy with the idea that eponymous species names go, no exceptions. Some babies will for sure go out with the bathwater, but it makes the proposal cleaner and easier to enact.’ He nuanced that point later in the editorial, balancing the views on both sides of the argument and stating that he saw making the change to names all at once as a bit drastic, suggesting that perhaps it ought to be done more gradually.
