A t t e m p t e d piracy b y Black-headed Gull o n R e d necked Grebe Peter Boardman's account of a Great Black-backed Gull Larus marinus harassing a Great Crested Grebe Podiceps cristalus (Brit. Birds 80: 114-115) recalled the following. O n 26th J a n u a r y 1987, on a small pool at Shingle Street, Suffolk, I spent an hour observing a Rednecked Grebe P. grisegena. It was diving a n d feeding on small fish, with a Black-headed Gull L. ridibundus in close attendance T h e gull followed the grebe on the surface when it dived, harassing it (rather half-heartedly, it seemed) whenever it came u p with a fish; the gull did not, however,E x t e n d e d foraging period o f nesting Swallows At about 22.30 hours local time on 13th J u n e 1986, in L o n d o n , O n t a r i o , C a n a d a , I saw several pairs of Swallows Hirundo rustica foraging a n d feeding well-grown young in their nests. T h e Swallows were nesting on ledges u n d e r a low roof outside a motel office. T h e area was o p e n o n three sides a n d was brightly lit by a n u m b e r of fluorescent tubes m o u n t e d on
