‘Penguin dance’ by juvenile Great Crested Grebes

During a photographic study of the life cycle of the Great Crested Grebe Podiceps cristatus, I captured these images (plates 218–219) of second-brood juveniles at Sevenoaks, Kent, in mid August 2018. These two chicks, approximately 42 days old and from a brood of four, are seen imitating the ‘penguin dance’ of the adults.
