On the morning of 15th June 2022, I observed a Reed Warbler Acrocephalus scirpaceus that had become caught by its bill in the apex of a bent Bulrush Typha latifolia in the centre of the River Stour at Bere Marsh Farm, Shillingstone, Dorset (plates 468 & 469). During the 41 minutes that I observed and filmed the bird, it made only two attempts to free itself; for the majority of the time, the bird simply hung from the Bullrush by its bill giving regular flicks or twitches of its tail. Perhaps it had been injured by the initial collision with the Bulrush stem or was simply exhausted. After some discussion with Andy Fale, the Countryside Regeneration Trust’s surveying officer for Bere Marsh Farm, I was able to wade into the river and reach the bird, by which time it had unfortunately died.
