The latest in a series of fine-quality art books by Langford Press, this focuses on the Great Fen project as seen by an international team of 30 artists, brought together by the Artist for Nature Foundation. This is an excellent book, indeed one of the best of recent offerings from Poyser, based as it is on the author's long-term studies and extensive knowledge of Bewick's Swans Cygnus columbianus. At just under 300 pages, it is not a particularly long book В and indeed 60 of these are devoted to appendices, tables and references В but therein lies the key to its success. Eileen Rees has managed to distil a lifetime of her own studies and a host of scientific research by others into a tight, scholarly account of this enigmatic species. However, this is no dry scientific text aimed purely at academics, and from the opening lines (`Of all the species of bird on this planet, the Bewick's Swan must be one of the most appealing') you begin to get a feeling for the intimate knowledge and respect that the author has for the species.
