Adam Rowland’s study of roosting Water Pipits Anthus spinoletta in Suffolk (Rowlands 2025) reflects my own experience of the species in southern Yorkshire, where the discovery of a small roost of up to five wintering birds between 2017 and 2020 led to the detailing of arrival and departure dates, habitat preferences and roosting behaviour (including arrival times at – but not departure times from – the roost), as well as data being gathered on an associated population of wintering Meadow Pipits A. pratensis (Lunn 2020).
