Vigorous westerlies dominated the early autumn and continued until mid September, which again was a cloudy month throughout Britain and Ireland, with heavy falls of rain. October was marked by unusually frequent northerly winds, and for central England was the fifdi-coldest October this Century, and the coldest since 1974 for Britain and Ireland as a whole.After the non-stop excitement of the previous four months (Brit. Birds 85: 636647), autumn 1992 proved generally unrcmarkable. August was noted for Britain's second R e d - n e c k e d Stint. Galidris ruficollis, third Yellow Warbier Dendroica petechia and fourth Rьppell's Warbier Sylvia meppellii (plate 104), a Bridled T e r n Stema anaethetus, a Rufous-tailed Scrub-robin Cercotrichas galaГ¤otes and a G r e e n H e r o n Butorides virescens. September will largely be remembered for Britain's second H o o d e d W a r b i e r Wilsonia citrina, a Western Sandpiper Calidris mauri in Ireland, and a tremendous passage of Black T e r n s Chlidonias niger.
