Utsira, Norway

Utsira is a small island (6.2 km2), 16 km off the west coast of southern Norway, located in the county of Rogaland. Its position makes it one of the most isolated spots on the Norwegian coast and, with a population of just 188, it is the country’s smallest municipality. It is accessed by a free ferry, which runs from Garpaskjжrskaien quay in Haugesund and takes about 70 minutes. The island’s position and isolation means it is perfectly placed for observing migrant birds – and, in particular, rare vagrants. At the time of writing, the Utsira list stands at 334 species.
