Dumfries & Galloway thinks of itself as the forgotten corner of Scotland. In reality, it is much more interesting than that: it is a patchwork of Scotland’s habitats, where the southernmost distribution of certain species meets the northern edge of the range of others. The nation in microcosm. Highland meets lowland; woodland meets an expanse of estuarine mud; well-known reserves meet acres of unwatched land.
