As part of a series of events to encourage and support young birders, the presentations for the ZEISS Young Birder Awards 2023, in collaboration with the Cameron Bespolka Trust (CBT), British Birds, BBRC and Cornell University, were held at the Global Birdfair, Rutland, in July 2023. Entrants were asked to document – by means of writing, photographs and/or illustrations – their best recent birding (or, for the youngest age class, general wildlife) experience. As last year, all three age categories (up to 11, 12–16 and 17–18) received a good number of high-quality entries and the judges – Toby Carter, Corinne Cruickshank, Paul French, Petra Kregelius-Schmidt, James Lidster, Stephen Menzie and Alli Smith, plus Patron of the awards, Richard Porter – had a tough time picking the winning entries from such an excellent field. In addition to a pair of ZEISS Terra binoculars and a selection of items from the CBT shop, the winners of the 12–16 and 17–18 categories win a year’s subscription to British Birds. Additionally, those shortlisted for the 17–18 category were interviewed by the judges and the winner of the age category was awarded a scholarship to attend the Cornell Lab of Ornithology young birder event in Ithaca, USA.
