Abstract Heligoland, almost 50 km from the German coast in the southeastern North Sea, is well known for its cliff-breeding seabirds, spectacular bird migration and long list of rarities. This paper gives a short overview of the island’s history, its habitats, birds, ornithological work and birding on the island.
