The winter of 1978/79 was the coldest in Britain since 1962/63, and produced outstanding numbers of several species, particularly waterbirds (Chandler 1981). The influx of Hen Harriers Circus cyaneus during the first quarter of 1979, however, was probably the most spectacular event of the winter.
